At Lakenheath Elementary School, kindergarten teachers Ms. Thompson and Ms. Rodriquez are finding creative ways to make learning meaningful for young students. Their recent classroom activity combined science and literacy in a simple but effective way.

Students began by learning about the anatomy of a fish, drawing and labeling its parts. In a playful twist, the teachers then invited students to use their phonics skills by choosing a body part of their teacher, sounding it out, writing the word and placing it on the correct spot. The classroom was filled with laughter and focus as children practiced reading and writing in a hands-on way.

“It made my day and gave me a smile,” said one staff member who observed the lesson. “These two kindergarten teachers bring so much light and joy to all those around them—big and small.”

Thompson and Rodriquez continue to show how thoughtful teaching can connect students to their learning and to each other. Their work is a reminder of the care and creativity happening every day in local schools.
