Lakenheath kindergarteners showcase learning in “Kindergarten is a Zoo”
Lakenheath Elementary School (LES) came alive with curiosity and creativity as kindergarten students presented their culminating showcase, “Kindergarten is a Zoo.” This engaging, student-driven project-based celebration highlighted the growth young learners made throughout the year in literacy, science, and communication.
Under the guidance of Ms. Erica Finlay, Ms. Natasha Kelty, Ms. Gretchen Kuchta, Ms. Sasha Rodriguez, and Ms. Stefanie Thompson, classrooms and the gym were transformed into immersive spaces of exploration.
Students took on the role of zoologists, conducting animal research that integrated academic content with hands-on learning. Through this process, they built critical thinking skills, strengthened communication, and developed a sense of ownership over their learning.
Throughout the project, students explored a variety of animals, practicing early research skills while improving their reading, writing, and speaking abilities.
By asking questions, gathering information, and sharing discoveries, they demonstrated both what they learned and how they learned it.
The integration of literacy and science allowed students to make meaningful connections and grow as confident communicators.
The showcase featured an interactive walking gallery where families and peers experienced the students’ work firsthand. Classrooms displayed student-created projects, visuals, and informational materials.
As visitors moved through the exhibits, young zoologists proudly explained animal habitats, diets, and behaviors, showcasing both their knowledge and presentation skills.
More than a presentation, “Kindergarten is a Zoo” was a celebration of growth, collaboration, and community. It reflected LES educators’ commitment to meaningful, student-centered learning and demonstrated the impact of project-based instruction.
As the school year concludes, the success of this showcase highlights the remarkable achievements of even the youngest learners when given opportunities to explore, create, and lead.
